  • Boat wiring and safety gear should follow the manual, the law and recognized standards.

General information only

Everything on boataxis.com is published in good faith for general information. It is not tailored to your boat, your skills or your local rules. Any action you take based on our content is your own decision and your own responsibility.

How our content is made

Boat Axis does not test products hands-on. We do not run a lab, and we do not claim personal use of the products we cover.

Our guides and reviews are researched from three sources: manufacturer specifications and published documentation, install manuals, and patterns found in verified owner reviews. Our ratings and picks are opinions based on that research and on the criteria we state on each page.

Not professional or electrical advice

Installing boat electronics can involve 12 volt and 24 volt wiring, fuel senders, through-hull fittings and drilling into your hull or dash. Mistakes can cause fire, leaks, injury or damage.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s install manual first.
  • Size fuses and wire to the manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Follow recognized standards, such as those from the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC).
  • Use a qualified marine electrician when you are not sure.

Safety first

If a guide on our site ever seems to conflict with your product’s manual, follow the manual.

Laws and regulations

Boating rules differ by country and state, and they change. Our guides do not replace the official rules. For example:

  • Navigation lights: in the United States, requirements come from the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Rules and depend on your boat’s length and type.
  • VHF radios: radio use is regulated by the FCC in the United States and by national authorities elsewhere.
  • Emergency beacons: 406 MHz EPIRBs and PLBs used in the United States must be registered with NOAA.

Always check the current rules with your local authority before you rely on any safety equipment.

Fit and compatibility

Dash cutouts, mount patterns, cable lengths, network connectors and sender resistance ranges vary between models and even between model years. Confirm fit with the manufacturer or retailer before you cut, drill or wire anything.

Prices and availability

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date and time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information shown on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply to the purchase of the product.
